Primary School Selection
How to select a Primary School
When a child completed K2, it is ready to select a Primary School that is good for the student and the family. For the safety of the child and cost saving for the family is important.
Anyway in Singapore, all Primary Schools are the same and all are good schools.
After Primary 6 that is PSLE, the child is bigger and is about 12 years old or more. At this time, most of the students are entering Secondary School.

Dyslexia and Perception

What causes it?
The exact cause of dyslexia is unclear but scientists know for sure that it has to do with how the brain is wired, and that it runs in families. Dyslexia affects males and females nearly equally, and people from different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds as well.Dyslexia describes a different kind of mind and has nothing to do with intelligence, and can carry surprising talents despite its well-known disadvantages.
“Dyslexics are overrepresented in the top ranks of people who are unusually insightful, who bring a new perspective, who think out of the box," -Sally Shaywitz, a leading dyslexia neuroscientist at Yale University, USA.
John F Kennedy, Lee Kuan Yew, Richard Branson, William Hewlett (co-founder of Hewlett Packard), Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Orlando Bloom and Tom Cruise are among the leading politicians, entrepreneurs, scientists and artistes who have turned the deficits of dyslexia into advantages.
What are the signs?
Most people associate dyslexia with mirror writing - that is writing letters in reversal e.g writing b as d. This however is just one sign and does not occur in all cases. Other problems experienced by dyslexics include:
1]. Difficulty learning to speak
2]. Poor reading ability, despite exposure to books at a younger age
3]. Lots of misspellings, even of common words, eg 'blue' for 'bule', 'does' for 'dose', 'god' for 'dog', 'b' for 'd', 'p' for 'q'
4]. Weak working memory. Difficulty remembering telephone numbers, lists of instructions and taking notes in class
5]. Uncertain of left and right
6]. Problems copying, from the board or book
7]. Poor handwriting

Not all those who have difficulties with these skills are dyslexic. A formal psychological testing is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of suspected dyslexia.

20 more Schools with School-based Dyslexia Remediation Programme -- MOS Sim Ann

Minister of State for Education Sim Ann spoke about enhancements to the School-based Dyslexia Remediation Programme (SDR) during the Committee of Supply Debates on 7 March. The SDR had been piloted since 2012 to aid students with dyslexia through early intervention. Following some success, this programme will be expanded to another 20 schools in 2014, with one in every three primary schools having the programme. The SDR will gradually be rolled out to more schools to allow MOE to adequately train staff so as to maintain the high quality of the programme.
Published on Feb 26, 2014In recent years, the number of students diagnosed with dyslexia has increased by about 10% each year, in part due to greater awareness among parents and teachers, and better identification processes.
Students with dyslexia, who can cope with the demands of the mainstream environment should, as far as possible, attend our national schools, to benefit from a common educational experience with other Singaporeans. If given appropriate help early, these students can significantly overcome the literacy difficulties associated with dyslexia.
MOE's School-based Dyslexia Remediation programme is a two-year intervention programme for Primary 3 and 4 students. These students are identified for support through a systematic screening process for dyslexia conducted at the end of Primary 2.
The programme is conducted in small groups by trained school personnel using a remediation curriculum designed by MOE Reading Specialists.
The preliminary findings from a pilot study in 2012 showed that students who had participated in the remediation programme had improved in their reading and spelling skills.
Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. Individuals with dyslexia have trouble with reading, writing, and spelling despite having at least an average intelligence. It is estimated that 15 to 20 percent of the population is dyslexic but most are never identified or diagnosed and left to struggle their entire life.
We know how to fix the reading, writing, and spelling issues that dyslexics struggle with. But there is a tremendous roadblock in the way and it is there because our governments, schools and educators are simply misinformed about what dyslexia is or they have no information at all.
By carefully weaving together interviews with parents, experts, and adult dyslexics, "Embracing Dyslexia" tackles the issues surrounding dyslexia like no other documentary film has before.
Parents share emotional stories of their anxiety and frustration over failing to understand why their children were struggling with reading, writing, and spelling and the life-altering impact the word dyslexia had on their lives.
Adult dyslexics courageously open up and speak candidly about their dyslexia, sharing their struggles and successes they have had in school and in their adult lives.
Experts define what dyslexia is, illustrate why early dyslexia screening for all children is vital, and share how effective tutoring, classroom accommodations, and fostering the natural strengths dyslexic's possess can take them from experiencing failure on a daily basis to believing in themselves and knowing that they can be successful.
